The Relief Society of Tigray is an indigenous Ethiopian non-governmental organization, working since 1978 on relief, rehabilitation and long term development programs in partnership with local communities of the National Regional State of Tigray.

MOVING AHEAD - REST 5 year plan from 2006 to 2010

  Organisational Goals and Objectives

 -Goal

REST’s overall goal is to bring about a sustainable improvement in food insecure livelihoods within REST operational areas.

- Strategic Objectives and expected results  

1.To strengthen household livelihoods within REST operational areas:

    1. Increased productivity in the agricultural sector
    2. Increased diversification within farm, off farm and non farm  economic sectors
    3. Improved market systems and linkages
    4. Reduction in household vulnerability to drought and other economic shocks
    5. Expansion and strengthening of community based institutions and organisations
    6. Enhanced capacity of local government and other relevant development actors

2.To improve the health and educational status of people in Tigray:

    1. Improved nutritional levels
    2. Reduction in spread of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases
    3. Improved access to primary health services
    4. Increased access to basic education
    5. Increased adult functional literacy

3.To promote empowerment of women in Tigray

    1. Improved access to livelihood assets and strategies within Tigray
    2. Measures taken to promote women’s equal participation in REST organisation and operations

4.To improve water security within Tigray

    1. Increased access to safe domestic water supplies
    2. To expand and diversify sustainable water harvesting and irrigation technologies
    3. To promote effective management and utilisation of water resources

5.To promote sustainable natural resource management

    1. Degraded land rehabilitated
    2. Existing natural woodlands and vegetation protected and expanded
    3. Targeted impacts of environmental degradation halted and reversed
    4. Sustainable usage of wood, soil and other natural resources  promoted
