Micro and Mini Dam irrigation development

Objective

  1. Conduct detail study and design with stack holders and beneficiaries of all level of project planning and implementation.
  2. Harvest runoff water during rainy season in reservoir and increase crop production (double or multiple cropping) with out much dependence on seasonal rainfall
  3. Achieve food sufficiency through irrigated agriculture in both dry and wet season irrigation, rehabilitation of the environment and ground water recharging
  4. Construct earthen dam with reservoir capacity of 100,000m3 to 1.5 million m3 to irrigate 10 to 100ha.
  5. Develop Micro and mini dam irrigation system.
Integrate upstream water shade with environmental rehabilitation and conservation measures for its sustainability.

Agricultural Development:

River Diversions irrigation development

Objective

      • Upgrade the traditional system by construct new permanent weir and farm structure.
      • Secure food self sufficiency by diverting perennial river and improve irrigation practice to increase the crop production for both dry and supplementary irrigation.
      • Avoid farmer’s work load.
      • Construct diversion weir and farm structure works
      • Establishment water user association and capacitate with training

      Community pond irrigation development

      Objective

        • Improve the rain feed agriculture by storing runoff water and used for supplementary irrigation.
        • Supplement up to 4 ha of land to avoid yield reduction due to moisture stress.
        • Series of ponds interconnected in series by network of main canal and stores the runoff water during rain season.
        • 3 to 5 series of ponds with 2,000 to 4,000 m3 holding capacity of water, and additionally embankment ponds having capacity of 10,000m3 which could irrigate up to 10ha.

        Pump irrigation development

        Objective

        • Practiced in areas where Perennial River exists and difficult to developed Agriculture using other irrigation technologies
        • Irrigated from 6 to 8 hectares of land from one pump scheme using 10-12 HP pump.
        • Water user association and capacitated with training of operation, minor maintenance, different agronomic practices.
        • Hand over functional irrigation system with provision of spare parts to the wereda water resources and Agricultural office
